Google is introducing cart transfer and expanded checkout testing in the Merchant Center hub for the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
Merchants using the UCP-powered checkout hub can enable a feature that allows customers to transfer products from Google to the merchant’s website for completing purchases. This new feature will be introduced in the U.S. first and then in Australia and Canada next year, as mentioned in a holiday shopping update by Ashish Gupta, Google’s VP and GM of Merchant Shopping.
UCP currently offers direct checkout for numerous brands and retailers on Google, as mentioned in the post. Additionally, it has introduced a U.S. beta version of Business Agent for YouTube ads and expanded the AI performance insights report to five countries.
Cart Transfer Arrives at the Merchant Center Hub.
Google’s developer documentation mentions the ability to transfer a cart, referred to as “Transfer to merchant cart,” which can be enabled by a merchant through Cart API support.
The documents now contain a list for that feature that avoids the complete setup of product feeds, product alerts, and specific customer support information. Additionally, there is a testing environment provided in the same section where you can evaluate cart and checkout requests that Google may generate.
The Cart feature has been previously discussed, with Google introducing the option for shoppers to move items directly to a merchant’s website. Retailers with hub access can select this transfer function during Merchant Center validation.
The hub is slowly being rolled out in the United States and will expand to Australia and Canada next year. Merchants can begin using the hub by completing the technical setup, submitting an interest form, and waiting to be selected.
Analytics has two conditions.
Google announced that analytics will be integrated into the UCP hub, according to its recent post. The developer documentation, last modified on September 3, outlines a UCP Analytics Reporting dashboard available within the Merchant Center tab.
This function is accessible to all merchants with UCP enabled and the Performance role. It offers information on the checkout process, including metrics like average order value and cancellations, as well as account linking details and top-selling UCP products. The Merchant API does not currently have access to this data, according to the documentation.
A business representative launches a beta version of YouTube ads.
Google is introducing a new U.S. beta initiative on YouTube ads called Business Agent, which invites retailers to participate. Those who meet the requirements and enroll will have a personalized agent featured in their ads on YouTube, enabling users to explore products and inquire without exiting the platform. Details like the eligibility criteria and duration of the beta are not provided in the announcement.
Business Agent became available on Search starting on January 12, as Google introduced it alongside UCP.
AI Performance Insights is now available in five different countries.
The AI performance insights report in Merchant Center is available to merchants in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the U.S. It is accessible for English-language queries in these countries, focusing on organic AI traffic and without including click metrics.
I described the pilot program in July for specific U.S. accounts. The report advised merchants on the product features to include, but it did not mention if AI Mode directed any visitors to their website. This remains the same.
Importance of this
The cart transfer service aims to assist retailers by addressing their concerns regarding lost opportunities when transactions occur on Google. It allows customers to seamlessly proceed to the merchant’s checkout page with their cart prepared, enhancing the shopping experience.
AI performance insights and the UCP analytics dashboard provide information at varying levels of detail. AI performance insights focus on metrics such as share of voice, frequency, and featured products, while the UCP analytics dashboard begins tracking from clicks on the Buy button and includes purchase data, as mentioned in the developer documentation.
Peering into the future
The UCP hub features are being introduced in stages in the U.S. currently, followed by Australia and Canada in the near future. The new options will be visible in the UCP integration section of the Merchant Center.
It is uncertain whether the hub’s analytics dashboard is available. Merchants with the UCP integration tab can verify the presence of an Analytics tab on their own.
